GRB 050826: A SUBLUMINOUS EVENT AT z = 0.296 FINDS ITS PLACE IN THE LUMINOSITY DISTRIBUTION OF GAMMA-RAY BURST AFTERGLOWS

چکیده
We present the optical identification and spectroscopy of the host galaxy of GRB 050826 at a redshift z = 0.296±0.001. Image subtraction among observations obtained on three consecutive nights, reveals a fading object 5 hr after the burst, confirming its identification as the optical afterglow of this event. Deep imaging shows that the optical afterglow is offset by 0.4 (1.76 kpc) from the center of its irregular host galaxy, which is typical for long-duration gamma-ray bursts. Combining these results with X-ray measurements acquired by the Swift XRT instrument, we find that GRB 050826 falls entirely within the subluminous, subenergetic group of long gamma-ray bursts at low redshift (z <∼ 0.3). The results are discussed in the context of models that possibly account for this trend, including the nature of the central engine, the evolution of progenitor properties as a function of redshift, and incompleteness in current gamma-ray burst samples. The Expected Rate of Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows In Supernova Searches
We predict the rate at which Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) afterglows should be detected in supernova searches as a function of limiting flux. Although GRB afterglows are rarer than supernovae, they are detectable at greater distances because of their higher intrinsic luminosity. Assuming that GRBs trace the cosmic star formation history and that every GRB gives rise to a bright afterglow, we find that...
متن کاملGrb 060121: Implications of a Short/intermediate Duration Γ-ray Burst at High Redshift
Since the discovery of the first short-hard γ-ray burst afterglows in 2005, the handful of observed events have been found to be embedded in nearby (z < 1), bright underlying galaxies. We present multiwavelength observations of the short-duration burst GRB 060121, which is the first observed to clearly outshine its host galaxy (by a factor > 10). A photometric redshift for this event places the...
متن کاملA Standard Kinetic Energy Reservoir in Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows
We present a comprehensive sample of X-ray observations of 41 γ-ray burst (GRB) afterglows, as well as jet opening angles, θj for a subset with measured jet breaks. We show that there is a significant dispersion in the X-ray fluxes, and hence isotropic X-ray luminosities (LX,iso), normalized to t = 10 hr. However, there is a strong correlation between LX,iso and the beaming fractions, fb ≡ [1 −...
متن کاملGRB Progenitors and their environment
The detection of supernova features in the late spectra of several gamma-ray burst afterglows has shown that at least a fraction of long-duration gamma-ray bursts are associated to the final evolutionary stages of massive stars. Such direct observations are impossible for bursts located at redshift beyond z ∼ 0.5 and different methods must be used to understand the nature and properties of thei...
متن کاملX-ray continuum properties of GRB afterglows observed by XMM-Newton and Chandra
We present a catalog of XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows, reduced in a common way using the most up-to-date calibration files and software. We focus on the continuum properties of the afterglows. We derive the spectral and temporal decay indices for 16 bursts. We place constraints on the burst environment and geometry. A comparison of the fast XMM-Newton f...
